CORAL SPRINGS, FL – The community of Coral Springs has chosen a purveyor of sweet treats and big-hearted charity as its latest recipient of the prestigious MLK Monument Award. Dan Bruck, the local chocolatier and owner of Kilwins Coral Springs, was recognized for his 22 years of contributions to the local community. The Coral Springs Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee presented Bruck with the award for his service during a ceremony at City Hall, an event that also saw him honored at the City Commission Meeting that followed, according to the Coral Springs official website.
The award celebrates individuals who personify Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s ethos, and Bruck's dedication to community service speaks to this mission. His generosity includes donations, fundraising help, and offering volunteer services across various local organizations. Notably, he has organized ice cream socials for seniors and aided in feeding nearly 400 families a week through the Dare to Cure program. "All I can say is, I enjoy diversity, I really do," Bruck told Coral Springs Talk. "I can’t imagine a world where we’re all the same."
One of Bruck's more extravagant donations was a 22-pound chocolate rabbit he gave to the Kids of Love Foundation, a group supporting children with cancer. The raffle of the chocolate bunny helped raise vital funds for the charity. Other acts of kindness include his support of the Coral Springs Annual MLK Golf Tournament with raffle baskets, and contributions that helped stock the MLK Scholarship Fund with much-needed resources.
Bruck was selected from a competitive field of four nominees, which included Marcus Duncanson, Karla Garcia, and Dr. Mark Gendal. "From setting up ice cream socials to volunteering his time at various organizations, Dan demonstrates the best qualities of a true community leader and exudes the same selfless spirit as Martin Luther King, Jr.," said Commissioner Joshua Simmons in an interview with the Coral Springs official website.
Bruck's selection affirms that impact can come in many forms, from the grand gestures of charitable donations to the simple act of providing a space for community gathering. And in Coral Springs, a scoop of ice cream serves as more than just a treat — it represents a symbol of unity and the sweetness of giving back.
