Downtown Portland is set to welcome an array of eye-catching feline figures as part of a new art initiative aimed at revitalizing the area. Celebrating the 15th anniversary of Laika's hit animated film 'Coraline', the project consists of 30 cat sculptures that will pepper the cityscape, each painted by local artists. In an effort led by Laika and the Visit Downtown Campaign, along with Wild in Art, the 'Coraline's Curious Cat Trail' opens up a free, whimsical art trail for the public this August, as per a report by KOIN 6 News.
Not just a tribute to the film's enigmatic Black Cat, these sculptures serve a dual purpose, not only by heralding Laika's storied local presence but also invigorating the city's streets, in turn, drawing visitors and locals alike to a new downtown experience, the artworks hand-painted by Portland's artists tell tales that reflect the city's vivacious art community, and in the end, each will be auctioned with proceeds going to the OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital, as mentioned in a release covered by BNN Breaking. 'Coraline' animator Brad Schiff expressed his enthusiasm for the project and the opportunity to celebrate Laika's Oregon roots, "I love it. I love living here in Oregon. It’s been my home for almost 30 years now,” Schiff said, conveying his love for the Pacific Northwest and an appreciation for being able to create outside of Hollywood, in statements obtained by KOIN 6 News.
