In celebration of Black History Month, the Dallas Airport System has rolled out an array of educational and inspiring events at both Dallas Love Field (DAL) and Dallas Executive Airport (DEA). Travelers passing through DAL can feast their eyes on an art installation spotlighting the Divine 9, a coalition of nine historically Black fraternities and sororities, standing as pillars of excellence in African American history and culture. This groundbreaking showcase, located between the terminal’s TSA security and baggage claim, is available for all until February 29, according to the City of Dallas.
Further stirring the community spirit, a career development day slated for February 22 invites HBCU grads, members of the Divine 9, and those in the Black Employee Support Team (BEST) to engage with local leaders, indulge in wellness workshops, and explore the airport through a specialized tour. The initiative remains a commitment to nurturing future black leaders, while the city manager and municipal officials will be in attendance, supporting the professional advancement of these inspired individuals.
On February 28, DAS teams up with the Dallas Independent School District for "Leaps & Bounds," an educational event at the Frontiers of Flight Museum starring Captain Barrington Irving, a two-time Guinness World Records holder and pioneering aviator. Rozalind Dickerson Cleaver, the Airport Relations/Community Engagement Manager for DAS, underscored the agency’s dedication to "celebrating diversity and providing educational programs and workshops," as she expressed—events that are not just complimentary but packed with invaluable content often beyond reach for many, as per the City of Dallas.
DAL isn’t just a venue for flying; it's a hub buzzing with more than traveler activity, a claim bolstered by its impressive 17.5 million passenger service record in 2023, this established DAL as the busiest medium hub airport in the USA, and a source of considerable economic oomph—$5.6 billion in activity and over 28,000 local jobs—so it's clear, when DAL invests in celebrating Black history and nurturing future leaders, the ripples can be felt far beyond the runways.
