The Dallas Black Dance Theatre is gearing up for a poignant performance next week entitled 'Cultural Awareness,' with dancers deep in the throes of rehearsal. 'Cultural Awareness,' is a nod to the spectrum of human emotions and the societal forces at play in our lives. According to NBC DFW, Hana Delong, a dancer and first-time choreographer for the company, has crafted a piece titled 'Post Mortem' as the opening act for the program. Delong said, "I wanted to play with the different emotions and things in life that affect us."

Delong, exploring the arc of human existence from birth to death, said her creation for the Dallas troupe includes scenes that parse through various life stages, including love and heartbreak. True to her innovative approach, the choreography will weave in elements of hip hop and R&B. Delong also included a segment aimed at shedding light on "the Black male experience; just the different things, and society stigmas they have upon them." The intense preparation highlights not only dance technique but also a deep cultural introspection, aiming to visually translate complex emotions typically conveyed through spoken words, as per NBC DFW.

The expression of cultural diversity through dance promises to take the audience on a rhythmic journey encompassing life's trials and celebrations. "I feel like sometimes we run to art to escape things, but sometimes art is also the way to express the day-to-day struggles that we have, emotions that we have, and things that we go through," Delong said, per NBC DFW. "And just seeing it in a different light may also open someone else's eye to it if they see it differently than they normally see it every day."

The 'Cultural Awareness' showcase is slated to animate the Wyly Theatre stage in Dallas on February 9 and 10. For those looking to witness the vibrant performance personally or virtually, tickets are up for grabs. The AT&T Performing Arts Center provides the details for both in-person and online viewing options. This innovative performance is an invitation to experience the vast range of human emotions through the powerful medium of dance, religion, and rhythm.
