Chaos and concern took hold of DC's Navy Yard neighborhood early Thursday morning when a DC Housing Authority officer was shot, triggering a shelter-in-place order and a significant law enforcement response. The officer, who was struck in the stomach, was transported to a local hospital and remains conscious and breathing.
As reported by FOX 5 DC, the shooting incident occurred around 5:45 a.m. on the 400 block of M Street. Barricaded inside a nearby building, the suspect has since been secured, nearby roads were shuttered which disrupted the area's morning routine, including a two-hour delay at Van Ness Elementary School.
Officials were quick to urge residents to maintain safety measures. "Make sure all doors are locked and secure," they advised, as homes turned into fortresses against a potential threat. This standard protocol in active shooter situations is reflected in the MSN coverage of the event. The heavy police presence included a collaborative effort between the Metropolitan Police, Naval Police, Homeland Security, and Housing Authority Police.
While the community heaved a sigh of relief at the news of an expected recovery for the injured officer, the streets remained ensnared by the ongoing investigation and police activity. According to WJLA, the DC Housing Authority police are taking the lead on this investigation with the support of MPD, navigating through a labyrinth of details to piece together the morning's events.
Public transportation reeled under the weight of the law enforcement response, with Metro bus routes along eastbound M Street being affected. As officials continued to peel back layers of the incident.
