An explosion at a Michigan oil-pumping station has left one man dead and another injured. The incident occurred in Cass County, where 71-year-old Charles Lawrence of Lakefort was killed after a tank they were working on exploded, CBS News Detroit reported. The blast also injured 38-year-old Kevin Lawrence, who is expected to recover from his minor injuries.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office, as noted by ABC57, responded to the scene at the Trak Oil-owned facility located just before 4 p.m. on Bulhand Street. The explosion, which shook homes and was felt miles away, drew immediate concern from residents. One local, Vanessa Frias, recalled the moment as "loud, it was explosive," saying it shook her entire house. Frias, who lives across the street from the oil pumping station, alerted authorities and saw a man, covered in oil, emerge from the flames.

Frias witnessed Kevin Lawrence's attempt to save Charles Lawrence, but he was already killed by the time of the blast, as she shared with ABC57. The explosion's impact reached even those several miles away, with community members noting the strength of the explosion on social media.

Another local resident, Ronald Bowers, described the blast's aftermath to WNDU, saying he saw "a little bit of a grayish white cloud on the side of the woods over there." His brother, living three miles away, even felt the vibration. "It was quite a thump," he recounted. Michigan State Police Fire Marshal and the state's Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy are currently investigating the cause of the explosion, which remains unclear.

The tragedy has cast a somber mood over the region, known for its tranquility. "Somebody lost their father, somebody lost their uncle, somebody lost their husband today." Frias expressed her hope that the affected family can get through this trying time. "It’s just an unfortunate situation," she commented to ABC57. The community now waits for answers as officials work to uncover the details behind this deadly incident.
