Maricopa County has a new voice in the Arizona House of Representatives, with the Board of Supervisors appointing Dr. Elda Luna-Nájera as the legislator for District 22. Dr. Luna-Nájera, known for her work in the West Valley, steps into a role left vacant in a district that spans Tolleson and Avondale. Her predecessor, also a Democrat, necessitated a replacement from the same political party.
Supervisor Steve Gallardo expressed his support, stating, "I could not think of a more qualified person to fill this vacancy in LD-22," in a statement obtained by maricopa.gov.“Dr. Luna-Nájera is a respected community leader in the West Valley and her experience in the education system will make her a tremendous asset to the Arizona State Legislature. I am excited to see the great things she will do with this opportunity.”
Dr. Luna-Nájera's credentials include a doctorate in social work from the University of Southern California and a master's degree from Arizona State University's West Campus. Her hands-on experience managing programs for mental health, crisis intervention, homelessness, and foster care in Avondale's Agua Fria Union High School District has positioned her as a strong advocate in educational settings.
Her appointment came through the recommendation of a citizen’s panel responsible for filling the vacancy. Comprising individuals with ties to the community, the panel included Lorenzo Sierra, Avondale resident and former lawmaker, who served as chair; Sandra Cole, a retiree and LD-22 precinct committeeman; Francisca Montoya, from the Fowler Elementary School board; Adan Morado, a business owner in Tolleson, and Eleanor Perez, a Tolleson resident. Dr. Luna-Nájera will hold the position until the November 2024 General Election, when her name will appear on the ballot.
