In a pre-dawn raid on Monday, members of the Lake Superior Violent Offender Task Force backed by St Louis County and Duluth Police Major Crimes Investigators swooped in on 43-year-old Diaunte Shields to execute a search warrant. Shields, with active felony warrants for a parole violation and several drug and firearm offenses, was nabbed without a fight and found carrying over $33,000 in cash, numerous fake IDs, and documents.
The sting, set in motion at around 5:40 a.m., uncovered a treasure trove of illegal substances and a loaded pistol at Shield's home on Matterhorn Drive, adding a kilogram of compressed fentanyl, crack cocaine, and methamphetamine to the haul. The operation didn't stop at the residence, with investigators intercepting a suspicious mail package shortly after. Inside, a kilogram of cocaine was hidden beneath layers of vacuum sealing and spray foam.
A statement from the City of Duluth's official website lauded the task force, noting, "Good work by members of the Lake Superior Violent Offender Task Force for their continued efforts in taking harmful substances off the streets and holding violent offenders accountable for their actions."
The interception of the drug-laden package was greatly assisted by K9 Maverick's sharp sense of smell, proving that the collaborative efforts of law enforcement and their canine partners are pivotal in the fight against crime.
