Former City of Miami Commissioner Sabina Covo is the subject of an ongoing bribery probe. An executive order from Governor Ron DeSantis has revealed this inquiry into the ex-commissioner's activities. The same documents indicate that Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle has opted out of the case to sidestep any potential conflict of interest, as informed to the Governor, according to a report by NBC6.
In a surprising turn of events, Sabina Covo disclosed to NBC6 her astonishment regarding the accusations. "This is quite surprising as I haven’t been contacted by any agency or the Governors office. I led with the highest ethics and integrity and any review of my tenure, including my campaigns will confirm as such," Covo stated. "I candidly do not know what the investigation involves but I do know is that I conducted myself and my office with the utmost good-faith, ethics, and with sole interests of the residents of the City of Miami and District 2, where I live with my husband and three children."
A detail that exacerbated the investigation's complexity is the relationship between a key witness and the State Attorney's office. Connections like these frequently raise questions about the impartiality of legal proceedings and in this instance, it led to the aforementioned disqualification of the state attorney from the case.
The allegations and subsequent investigation have brought into the public eye the challenges of local governance and the intricacies involved in managing such positions. The story continues to unfold with NBC6 pledging to provide updates on this situation. In the meantime, the Miami Herald also confirmed Covo's investigation through a post on X, marking a bleak period for the former commissioner whose career has been plunged into uncertainty amongst these unfolding events.
