Residents of Falls City, Texas, found themselves shaken, but not stirred, as an earthquake rumbled through the small town south of San Antonio yesterday night. The tremor, with a magnitude of 3.5, occurred just 2 miles from Falls City around 11 p.m., according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Thankfully, no reports of injuries or damage surfaced following the seismic event.
The recent quake comes on the heels of a similar but slightly milder event that struck the same area the night prior. The USGS reported that a 3.2-magnitude quake hit Falls City, located 40 miles southeast of downtown San Antonio, after 8 p.m. on Wednesday, as KSAT News revealed. By 10 p.m., officials had not recorded any resultant harm to the community.
These back-to-back incidents are the latest in a series of small-scale quakes that have rattled the region in recent years. On June 15, 2019, a 3.6-magnitude tremor was noted near Poth and Falls City, signaling that the earth beneath Karnes County's surface remains restless. In July of 2023, Atascosa County, a neighbor to Karnes, felt two minor shakes, while September brought a series of four earthquakes, the strongest being a 4.0 in proximity to Falls City.
The emergence of these earthquakes in a state not typically known for seismic activity has left many asking questions about their cause, with speculation arising around natural shifts and man-made influences such as oil extraction or fracking. However, the USGS has yet to make any definitive statements pinpointing the exact reasons for the recent uptick in Texan tremors. Despite the uncertainty, local citizens maintain resilience, adapting to the unexpected jolts of mother nature with a composed and collected demeanor.
