A fatal hit-and-run on US-27 in Miramar has left one dead and caused significant traffic issues this morning. The body of the deceased was discovered by a passerby at around 6:45 a.m. near Krome Avenue, as NBC Miami reports. Miramar Police indicated that the victim's fatal injuries were consistent with those of a hit-and-run incident, though the identity of the victim has yet to be revealed.
All northbound traffic was redirected at Krome Avenue as the thoroughfare was closed to give way for the investigation, according to NBC Miami. The details surrounding the crash are still unclear, and the authorities have yet to find witnesses who were directly at the scene when police arrived which the driver was nowhere to be found.
A report by CBS News Miami described the location as a remote stretch of road where the crash occurred about half a mile north of Krome Avenue along the northbound lanes of US 27/Okeechobee Road. The Miramar police spokeswoman, Tania Rues, explained that a call reporting the body came in at around 6:15 a.m., and it is believed the man was walking along the road when he was hit.
Witnesses in the vicinity before dawn offered accounts of seeing the man, which includes Carlos Betancourt who works on a food truck nearby. "I saw him this morning, I think it was at 5:45 a.m., 5:50 a.m., he was walking on Okeechobee Road south, you know," he told CBS News Miami. Sonia Torrano, also a food truck worker, mentioned someone told her the man was not walking on the shoulder but in the street, adding, "For me it was not good, I did not feel good. I do not like that it happened but if you hit somebody, you have to stop and wait for the police, the police come and make that report."
