In a move that's kicking up some major soccer synergy, Texas-based FC Dallas has announced they're teaming up with Portuguese soccer titans Benfica in what's being called a "talent development partnership," a savvy play that ties together two of the top youth soccer academies in the world.
FC Dallas, known for funneling an impressive slew of players into the big-league scene, is now linked with a European club that's practically a player factory, churning out soccer stars like Bernardo Silva and Joao Felix, as The Athletic reports, and it’s not their first rodeo with international partnerships, having previously partnered with German heavyweight Bayern Munich. Dan Hunt, President of FC Dallas, boasted that "Partnering with a club that shares our commitment and has the legacy and talent that Benfica possesses allows both of us to keep creating incredible opportunities for athletes and soccer professionals globally".
Underscoring the aim to swap coaching strategies and give young talents a taste of varied soccer cultures and playing methods, the deal marks FC Dallas' intent to sculpt the Patrick Mahomes of the soccer pitch, as club president Dan Hunt put it during a press event covered by FOX 4 News. Meanwhile, Benfica's VP, Manuel de Brito, chimed in on the partnership’s potential, noting, "The United States is a strategic market for Benfica's growth strategy", and hailed FC Dallas as America's leading youth soccer academy, making the tie-up seem like a match made in soccer heaven.
Benfica, with a trophy case boasting 38 league championships and two European cups, provides a lofty bar for FC Dallas, aiming to raise the game in North Texas and beyond, while FC Dallas hopes to start their season strong – against San Jose Earthquakes on February 24, with a reinvigorated roster including freshly-signed Omar Gonzalez, a North Texas native back in the fold after 20 years, who said, "We have the potential to go all the way. This team is capable, we have the talent, we have the players, we have the mindset", as he prepares to hit the field for his home team, per FOX 4 News.
Adding to the fanfare of the big reveal on Tuesday, soccer fans learned that the culinary lineup at FC Dallas games will get a revamp too, with some Texas-sized treats like the Texas Monster Dog and Cheesy Chipotle Bacon footlong making the menu – because nothing says 'soccer' like a gut-busting footlong smothered in queso, right?
