A Flint Township man, Chad Allen Egan, 31, has been charged with felony murder and first-degree arson following a fatal house fire that claimed the life of Angela Craig, 43, along with her pet dog and cat. CBS Detroit reported that Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton announced the charges yesterday, linking Egan to the blaze that engulfed Craig's residence on the early morning of February 3.
Egan was seen walking on Lavelle Road, just west of Helber Street, by emergency responders on their way to the fire. The WNEM stated that he was later apprehended by authorities. Details from a video surveillance emerged, as cited by Leyton, which reportedly showed Egan walking toward and away from the victim's home multiple times that morning, having a brief encounter with a lighter in the front yard of an abandoned house across the street, then the camera ceased to capture his movements.
Before the fire, Craig had reached out to the Flint Township police, reporting that Egan was persistently knocking on her door and requesting that he be made to leave, as per Mid-Michigan Now. Officers who responded reportedly spoke briefly with Egan, after which both parties departed the area, leaving Craig without direct contact.
According to CBS Detroit, in the nearby neighborhood's surveillance footage, homes became illuminated from the fire breaking out at Craig's home, mere moments after Egan had crossed into the off-camera beyond. Police have detained Egan without bond, and he is expected to return to court on February 15 for a probable cause conference.
