Former San Antonio Spurs player Bryn Forbes was arrested and charged with family violence, San Antonio police confirmed. The alleged assault occurred Monday at an apartment on the city's northwest side. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by KENS 5, Forbes showed up unannounced at the victim's home and is accused to have punched her in the head and choked her.
The documents state that Forbes allegedly "pressed his arms against her throat, making it difficult for her to breathe" and tightened his hands around her neck. Forbes has a history with the victim, sharing two children together. This latest charge of Assault-Family Choking/Strangulation comes nearly a year after previous family violence charges were dropped against the 30-year-old.
Forbes, who has not played in the NBA this season, managed to get into more trouble just seven weeks after receiving pretrial diversion for an earlier case. According to reporting by KSAT, Forbes assaulted a different woman last February, but the court granted him diversion in late December—a program usually reserved for defendants with no or minimal criminal history and typically not available for defendants charged with using a deadly weapon.
As per the arrest warrant, the woman claimed that Forbes, upon entering her apartment, immediately began to assault her. When she told Forbes she couldn't breathe, he reportedly replied, "if you can speak you are not being choked." Forbes was taken into custody around 11:35 a.m. today. His defense attorney had "no comment" on behalf of his client when reached out to by KSAT via text message this afternoon.
Bryn Forbes had a seven-year NBA career, playing for teams such as the Spurs, Bucks, Nuggets, and Timberwolves, averaging 8.8 points per game and maintaining a 41% shooting record from the 3-point line. Despite his professional achievements, his off-court issues have lately cast a long shadow. The outcome of this case remains to be seen as legal processes unfold.
