A Fort Worth man's escape plan went south when he decided to take a plunge into the Trinity River while fleeing from police. Garrett Seaton, 30, was busted for a burglary attempt on Monday morning after trying to break into multiple cars at an apartment complex garage and now faces a slew of charges. Police reported to the chaotic scene in the 300 block of Oakhurst Scenic Drive around 5 a.m., following a call about a burglary in progress, according to Fort Worth Police records referenced by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
When Seaton encountered the officers, he decided his best bet was to outrun them. Fleeing from the officers, he spotted the nearby river and, undoubtedly seeking a quick escape, jumped in without a second thought. However, the river didn't provide the sanctuary he anticipated, and he came back onto dry land "a short time later," at which point the authorities nabbed him, as detailed by police. His soggy misadventure landed him with charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and evading arrest, on top of having a previous record for the same, as per NBC DFW.
Despite Seaton's brisk swim, the Fort Worth Fire Department had to intervene to pull him to safety. After being rescued, he was whisked away to the hospital for a medical evaluation. It looks like Seaton's attempted escape has only added to his list of problems. As of Monday night, Seaton remains hospitalized, possibly contemplating a getaway that proved more wet than wild.
This latest caper adds to Seaton's criminal portfolio with the theft of property charge valued between $1,500 and $20,000 still pending. The Fort Worth community, meanwhile, can rest a bit easier knowing that an alleged repeat offender is currently behind bars—or in this case, hospital bedsheets. It's a reminder that crime doesn't pay, especially when your getaway route involves the unpredictable currents of a river that's less than forgiving to those who underestimate it, as police records have indicated.
