The Fulton County Board of Ethics is set to take center stage on March 7 as it will consider two complaints lodged against District Attorney Fani Willis regarding her professional conduct. According to a FOX 5 Atlanta report, the complaints were filed by Substack blog founder Gregory Mantell and Steven Kramer. They highlight concerns over Willis’s association with Special Prosecutor Nathan Wade in the Georgia election interference case and raise questions about their alleged relationship and the handling of funds.
The board’s review appears to be another hurdle for Willis who has vehemently denied wrongdoing. The upcoming meeting is merely the latest in the ongoing drama that seems to be trying hard to follow Willis like a stubborn shadow. Gregory Mantell has specifically asked for Willis’s expense reports from the past few years and contracts related to Wade, expressing belief that there's more to the story that's not being disclosed. Meanwhile, Steven Kramer has raised issues regarding the ethicality of Willis’s actions surrounding her procurement of funds and the engagement of Wade, as well as the potential cost of their supposed impropriety to the taxpayers.
While the ethical review is pending, there is debate over the actual weight of the county ethics code against Willis, who is a state constitutional officer. As per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, even if Willis is found in breach, the penalty would only be an administrative sanction with a fine up to $1,000 and a public reprimand—barely a scratch on the surface in terms of legal repercussions.
Heavy scrutiny is nothing new for Willis who has not only faced inquiries from the Board of Ethics but also from Republican-led investigations at the state and federal level. Despite the storm brewing over her head, she continues to push for a trial date in August for the former president and his co-defendants. Notably, Willis has already managed to secure plea deals from four co-defendants in the election interference case. The integrity of her office and the case she is spearheading will undoubtedly remain under the microscope, especially since the trial date for Trump and his co-defendants has yet to be set.
Through all this, Willis and Wade maintain that their romance bloomed strictly post Wade’s hiring as a special prosecutor and deny any misconduct related to their handling of the case. Willis, exhibiting defense during her testimony, went as far as to accuse the opposition attorney of deceit, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. With legal experts weighing in on the potential implications of their continued involvement, the proceedings in Judge McAfee’s courtroom are expected to unfurl with final arguments to be laid out by both sides shortly.
