The game of flag football is no longer just a boys' club, thanks in part to trailblazers like Anyiah Sanchez and a growing number of female athletes who are finding camaraderie, scholarship opportunities, and, soon, a shot at Olympic glory. Sanchez, who began her journey at the Boys & Girls Club in Guadalupe, made headlines as the first female to play flag football at her local branch, according to a report by ABC15.
Sanchez's mother, Raelyn Martinez, was looking to engage her children in post-school activities. When her daughter Anyiah showed an affinity for sports and inquired about playing flag football, the coaches welcomed her to the boys' team. Eventually, she distinguished herself as one of the team's star players. Drew Veatch, an Area Director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley, praised Sanchez’s ability to mentor her teammates, emphasizing her role in building team spirit and skill, "She was rallying the troops, she corrected things in a friendly manner," Veatch told ABC15. In what may seem to be an unexpected but progressive step, Veatch has now offered her a coaching position at the club.
The growth of girls' flag football is not isolated to one region, and has received a major boost with the sport’s recent addition to the Olympic lineup for the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. Long considered just a casual pastime, flag football has transformed, creating a robust network of female players and leagues nationwide, as detailed in an AP News article.
The integration of flag football in the Olympics is seen not just as a win for inclusion, but also as a testament to the sport's growing popularity and legitimacy. "The announcement (of flag football being in the Olympics) was rocket fuel to an already very fast-paced growth trajectory," Scott Hallenbeck, the CEO of USA Football said, in reference to the increasing number of girls and women taking up the sport. Flag football has seen a surge, with a 178% jump in participation for girls ages 6-12 between 2014 and 2022, according to USA Football's research cited by AP News.
