Senior citizens are taking their lifetime of experience back to school – but this time as tutors helping Mesa's kids to crack the code of literacy. The AARP Experience Corps Mesa program is recruiting volunteers aged 50 and above to help second- and third-graders in Mesa Public Schools, as reported by ABC15. These are individuals who have the patience to slowly guide, the wisdom to share, and now, the opportunity to make an impact where it counts.

In an effort sure to skillfully enhance young minds, these silver-haired volunteers are trained extensively in an evidence-based curriculum developed by AARP. Their mission is simple but profound: to bring struggling readers up to the grade-level benchmarks they need to not only succeed academically but to also gain fundamental skills that will serve them for life. The program also extends beyond the individual benefits for the kids, providing meaningful engagement and social connections for the older adults, too.

For those interested in taking on this rewarding challenge, the Mesa program will begin recruiting volunteers for the 2024-2025 school year this upcoming spring. As outlined on the program's official website of Mesa Arizona, requirements for potential tutors include having a high school diploma or GED, passing a criminal background check, and committing to at least five hours per week during the school year.

Getting involved isn't meant to be daunting either. Prospective volunteers need to simply attend an information session, complete an online application, and undergo an interview with the Experience Corps Mesa staff. Those seeking to truly make a difference in a child's educational journey – and perhaps to rediscover a sense of purpose in their own – are being invited to join the interest list and be among the first to apply for this unique opportunity.
