Residents of the 003rd District in Grand Crossing are on high alert after a series of armed robberies have shaken the community this February. According to a community alert issued by the Chicago Police Department (CPD), numerous individuals have been accosted by a group of 2-4 male suspects brandishing firearms and demanding property.
The troubling spree includes incidents on the 7000 block of South Phillips Ave. and the 2500 block of East 71st Street, both on February 7, as well as an occurrence on the 7400 block of South Merrill Ave. on February 9. The offenders, described as African American males ranging from 15 to 30 years old, appear to be targeting victims indiscriminately, striking fear in the hearts of neighborhood residents.
There's a clear MO: the assailants confront their targets with a show of force, leaving little room for resistance. A firearm is either implied or plainly visible during these confrontations, allowing the criminals to quickly and efficiently depart with stolen goods. CPD is stepping up efforts to reassure and protect the community, encouraging the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
For those faced with potential danger, law enforcement advises to remain calm and focus on remembering any distinctive features of the assailants. "Never pursue a fleeing assailant, provide the information to the police,” cautions the CPD's statement. Citizens are also urged to keep an eye out for each other: if approached by witnesses, they should obtain contact information before immediately calling 9-1-1 and staying on the scene when possible.
