A Grosse Pointe Farms middle school went into lockdown early Thursday amid a police search for an armed robbery suspect in the vicinity, impacting several schools as law enforcement combed the area. Brownell Middle School was the focal point of the operation after a robbery near Mack and McKinley avenues prompted a swift response, according to a report by CBS News Detroit.
The search soon expanded, leading Grosse Pointe Public Schools to place four other institutions—Kerby Elementary, Maire Elementary, Richard Elementary, and South High School—under a "soft lockdown." The term meant to allow the school day to proceed while strictly controlling access to the buildings, the district explained. Later in the day, all schools had lifted the lockdown as police indicated the suspect was believed to no longer be in the area, announced Superintendent Andrea Tuttle in a message to parents obtained by The Detroit News. "Local authorities have indicated that there is no longer a threat to students and staff," Tuttle said.
Describing the suspect, police said he was last seen wearing tan pants, a dark jacket, and possibly an Amazon vest, as detailed by a FOX 2 Detroit report. Authorities actively combed through residential yards in the search area near Mack and Chalfonte avenues while the suspect was reported to be armed with a handgun.
As the situation unfolded, residents were alerted to the nearby threat and urged to stay clear of the area, while anyone with information was asked to promptly contact police at 313-885-2100, per the notification from local officials.
