Hamtramck is set to host its 12th annual 5k Paczki Run tomorrow, where participants not only test their athletic prowess but also partake in a Polish-flavored celebration — complete with paczki and, for those legally permissible, a nip of vodka to toast their accomplishment. According to the Detroit Free Press, more than 700 runners have already signed up for the race, which funds future park plans for the city. Street closures are to begin around Joseph Campau Avenue prior to the race.
The event, a partnership between Tour de Troit and the city, encourages participants to celebrate Hamtramck's diversity, dubbed "the world in 2 square miles." Meanwhile, the run intends to quickly burn off the calories ahead of Fat Tuesday's typical indulgence. WXYZ's coverage notes Vittoria Katanski, director of Tour de Troit, said, "We know that it can be cold here in Michigan in February but that won’t stop us from running first, and then polkaing all day long!"
After crossing the finish line, runners can expect not just medals, but also a taste of local culture with fresh paczki and beer served up in true festive spirit. According to the Detroit Free Press, amenities for participants also include a catering of complementary paczki-flavored vodka shots from a tent — ensuring the post-race glow is both literal and metaphorical. The event concludes with an afternoon polka music fest and a performance by the Misty Blues Band.
