A potentially deadly crash was narrowly averted in Clam Lake Township after a 67-year-old woman drove her SUV the wrong way on US-131 and collided head-on with a Dodge Ram, WWJ Newsradio reports. The incident took place Sunday, causing minor injuries to the errant driver.
Michigan State Police responded to the crash scene on southbound US-131 near Mile Marker 177 after the driver of a GMC Terrain allegedly entered the freeway from an off-ramp and proceeded northbound in the southbound left lane. According to WPBN/WGTU, the Dodge Ram, traveling southbound, tried to avoid the SUV by moving over into the right lane, but clipping the Terrain still resulted in a head-on crash.
The occupants of the Dodge, identified as a 60-year-old man from Boston, New York, and his 61-year-old passenger from Eden, New York, were left uninjured, as reported by Local Accident Reports. Meanwhile, the Lake City woman at the helm of the Terrain was taken by ambulance to Munson Hospital in Cadillac for treatment of her minor injuries.
Michigan State Police have ruled out alcohol or drugs as contributing factors in the collision, yet driving the wrong way on a divided highway paved the way for the woman to receive a citation, according to WWJ Newsradio. Southbound US-131 was temporarily shut down during the on-scene investigation but reopened shortly after.
