A chaotic scene unfolded on Houston's East Freeway yesterday night when at least one person was killed in a wrong-way crash involving a stolen car, Houston police reported.
The incident began downtown around 9 p.m. as officers pursued the stolen vehicle on Chartres Street. The driver managed to elude law enforcement by entering the freeway in the wrong direction, leading to a horrific collision while traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes. According to a Houston Chronicle report, Lieutenant Larry Crowson of HPD stated the pursuit was called off due to safety concerns, just before the ensuing accident.
Upon arrival at the crash site, authorities found several individuals outside the mangled cars. The KHOU report detailed that at least five people were transported to regional hospitals following the crash, and tragically, a woman seated in the back of the stolen car was confirmed dead at the scene.
The driver of the stolen vehicle was apprehended and hospitalized, as confirmed by Crowson and, several other occupants who fled the scene are currently being sought by investigators. The innocent driver involved in the head-on impact was also taken to the hospital, while the westbound lanes of I-10 east of downtown remained closed for hours as the crash was meticulously examined by authorities.
