A tragic roadway collision has claimed the life of a 71-year-old woman in Houston, Texas, following a crash on Sunday night, according to authorities. The Houston Police Department reported that 30-year-old Alexander Leiva was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter after the fatal accident at the intersection of Bissonnet Street and South Dairy Ashford Road.
The crash occurred at about 8:20 p.m. when Leiva, operating a black Ford F-150, ran a red light and collided with a silver Nissan Juke, causing it to careen over a grassy median and to then strike a gray Honda CRV. Iris Rodriguez, the driver of the Nissan, was transported by paramedics but tragically pronounced deceased at the hospital. Leiva, along with his passenger and two occupants of the Honda, suffered non-fatal injuries, per a statement obtained by the City of Houston News.
Leiva, who was reportedly found to be impaired at the time of the crash, has been charged but is currently hospitalized with no booking photo available as of yet. Further details about the accident have been provided by HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant Y Ramirez and Officer C. Morales. As the legal proceedings unfold, Leiva's intoxication manslaughter charge in the 351st State District Court stands as a sobering reminder of the consequences of impaired driving.
