A morning trip to the gas station turned deadly for a man and his nephew in north Houston on Wednesday when an attempted armed robbery escalated into a fatal shootout. The Houston Police Department reported to the scene outside Sunny's Food Store around 6:33 a.m., where gunfire broke the early serenity of Bauman Road, following a confrontation that claimed the life of a nephew right in front of his uncle's eyes.

According to ABC13, the nephew, in his late 20s, had entered the store to make a purchase and upon exiting, was accosted by an armed suspect, who demanded cash. The uncle, witnessing this, armed himself and engaged, striking an individual in a gray Chevy Impala, the supposed getaway car. The nephew was shot in the head.

"These guys were just going to work. They were hardworking people, up early in the morning driving to work, getting gas, and this is what happens," Houston Police Department Detective Alexander Vinogradov expressed the harrowing nature of the crime in a statement obtained by ABC13. Investigators are combing through surveillance footage and have reportedly taken three suspects into custody, who may face charges of capital murder for the incident.

Further details were confirmed as authorities found the suspect's vehicle at Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, with one of the accused receiving treatment for gunshot wounds, according to Click2Houston.
