A tragic series of events unfolded in northeast Harris County as authorities discovered a mother deceased alongside her whimpering two-year-old son. Fox 26 Houston stated that the Houston Police Department (HPD) responded to a home on the 24500 block of Fir Ridge Court around 1 p.m., Monday, after the suspect had already fatally shot himself in Louisiana. According to HPD, the initial visit by officers was for a welfare check at approximately 8:45 a.m., but there was no response at the home, leading them to depart without entry.
Later that day, police received a second call and arrived to find the suspect's daughter in the company of the Houston Fire Department. As reported by ABC 13, Asst. Chief Patricia Cantu disclosed, "The daughter was able to open the door for the officers and the firemen." Law enforcement and firefighters then uncovered the grim scene: two bedroom doors on the second floor were tied shut with cables, behind which the young boy and the dead woman were discovered in separate rooms.
Upon breaking into the rooms, officers were greeted by the sight of the child, fortunately in good health, as per the fire department's assessment while the child's mother pronounced dead at the scene. While an official cause of death is yet to be released, preliminary information suggests a violent altercation had occurred. An article by Fox 26 Houston described that the 28-year-old woman appeared to have been beaten and stabbed multiple times.
The suspect, a man in his 40s or 50s and not the father of the boy, had called his daughter earlier that day to confess to the killing of his girlfriend. ABC 13 further reported that it was after receiving this confession, that the daughter immediately alerted police, forewarning them of the suspect's imminent arrival at a relative's home in Louisiana. Law enforcement was prepared for his arrival and, tragically, the man took his life shortly after reaching the destination at around 11:40 a.m.
HPD authorities have kept the identities of those involved under wraps as the investigation proceeds. A statement made to ABC 13 by HPD has affirmed that Child Protective Services has been called in and there are plans to safely relocate the young child to the care of family members.
