A Houston woman recovering from multiple gunshot wounds inflicted by Harris County Sheriff's Deputies has sought the legal expertise of civil rights attorney Ben Crump. Eboni Pouncy was shot five times in her friend's apartment, after deputies mistook her for being involved in an unrelated burglary at the same complex on February 3, according to a statement from Ben Crump's office.

Reports indicate that Pouncy and her friend entered the apartment through a window after being locked out, which caught the attention of a neighbor who subsequently called 911, FOX 26 Houston reported. Startled by pounding on the door after 2 am, and fearing an intruder, Pouncy had picked up her legally-registered gun. Unaware of the officers' presence, deputies opened fire through the door, hitting her with five bullets, as confirmed by her attorney.

The attorney's team is currently not filing a lawsuit but is gathering information, as Paul Grinke, Director of Litigation at Ben Crump Law, stated. "We would like to work together with the sheriff's department to ensure something like this doesn't happen again," Grinke said in a FOX 26 interview. Ben Crump's office also demands the release of unedited police body camera footage to provide transparency about the incident.

Harris County Sheriff's Office has responded by placing the two deputies involved, one with four years of service, and the other with one year, on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated. The Harris County District Attorney's Office is also conducting an independent investigation. According to FOX 26 Houston, the authorities have promised to release bodycam footage within 45 days.

The shooting has echoes of the tragedy that befell Breonna Taylor, lighting a fire under civil rights concerns. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Eboni Pouncy as she recovers from not only her bullet wounds, but also the mental trauma that accompanies being shot," Crump's office expressed. This incident has spurred inquiries into the deputies' prior use of force incidents, but the records requests made remain pending as the community seeks answers.
