Inter Miami is beefing up their roster with Argentine blood, having just secured 21-year-old Federico Redondo on a four-year deal. Redondo, the progeny of the legendary Fernando Redondo of Real Madrid and AC Milan fame, could potentially stick with the club until 2028, courtesy of a team option. This move, confirmed on Friday, is a power play by Miami as they look to continue their hot start to the 2024 MLS season after a 2-0 victory earlier this week.
While healing from a season-ending injury, the promising midfielder Facundo Farias will be replaced by Redondo, signed from Argentinos Juniors. After tearing his ACL last month in a preseason scare, the club was in a desperate search to fill the void. According to CBS Miami, Chris Henderson, Inter Miami's sporting director and chief soccer officer, praised the new addition, saying, "He's a very promising player who is sharp with the ball at his feet, and shows awareness out of possession. We believe in his potential, but also feel he will immediately be a strong addition to our squad."
The young midfielder's arrival was not only celebrated by team executives but also noted with a sweet price tag of $8 million. As a youth star, Redondo qualifies as an U22 Initiative player, meaning his impact on Inter Miami’s budget is just a $200,000 dent. Despite his relative greenness, the Argentine has already donned the national jersey several times, making waves at the U20 World Cup and the ongoing Conmebol pre-Olympic qualifiers.
After leaving behind a sunny chapter at Argentinos Juniors, claimed by an emotional Instagram post, Redondo is now poised to bask under the Florida sun. According to a ESPN report, he gushed about the move, "I'm very happy to join a Club that is growing so much," Redondo said. "It's a great opportunity to share the pitch with top players." His arrival fills the shoes of midfielder Gregore, who recently packed his bags for Brazil's Botafogo.
The club's Argentine flavor is undeniable, with the maestro himself, Lionel Messi, leading the pack alongside coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino. Redondo's integration will further bolster this Latin influence, adding to the cosmopolitan character of the team. Inter Miami, now with its sights set on the upcoming match at the LA Galaxy, hopes that this latest infusion of Argentine talent will be a formula for long-term success.
