A routine crackdown on a local smuggling ring took a shocking turn after authorities nabbed an internationally wanted murder suspect hiding in plain sight. Bexar County Sheriff’s Office disclosed the details of the operation, which led to the apprehension of three individuals linked to a human smuggling network. FOX San Antonio reports the bust occurred near the 1400 block of W Southcross.
In a statement released at a press conference, Sheriff Javier Salazar proclaimed the capture of Cesar Vanegas, 23, Ramiro Martinez, 23, and Raul Rodriguez, 19, who now face state charges, including Smuggling of Persons and Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity. Operating a stash house, where the suspects allegedly hid, Vanegas was slapped with an additional charge. Among the smuggled individuals discovered, a 2-year-old was included, caught up in the illicit operation.
Unveiling a twist in the investigation, officials highlighted the identification of Francisco Carmona, 59, a fugitive with active warrants originating from Mexico. Wanted for homicide dating back to 2009 and kidnapping charges in 2022, Carmona was found among those smuggled. Transferred into federal custody, he now awaits the hand of justice, extended across international borders.
