The Orange County-based hub experienced a 0.4% rise in airline passenger traffic last month, serving 884,884 travelers compared to the January 2023 count of 881,049 passengers.
In a similar mode of modest growth, commercial aircraft operations for January 2024 saw a 0.4% increase, with 7,686 recorded movements indicating signs of steady recovery, although commuter aircraft operations experienced a notable decrease of 14.5%, which reflects shifting dynamics within the commuter sector, this contrast paints a complex picture of the evolving aviation landscape, where the push and pull of various market forces manifest in these minute shifts in traffic and operations. The airport, however, posted a significant 20.4% jump in total aircraft operations, reaching 24,587 in January 2024 versus the 20,413 recorded the same month the prior year, according to John Wayne Airport, Orange County.
General aviation has emerged as a key growth area, claiming a substantial 66.9% of total aircraft operations for the month and marking a notable 34.4% increase when compared to January of the preceding year. Meanwhile, the top three airlines in terms of passenger count for January 2024 were Southwest Airlines with significant numbers at 280,796, American Airlines at 149,607, and United Airlines not far behind carrying 135,022 passengers.
