Last night, law enforcement from Walnut Creek and Concord joined forces in a high-speed chase that ended with the collar of an alleged car thief. The Walnut Creek Police Department (WCPD) responded to a Be On the Look Out (BOLO) alert from the Concord Police Department (CPD) about a stolen Hyundai last seen cruising on Ygnacio Valley Rd from Oak Grove Rd. Officers spotted the vehicle as it merged onto the Highway 24 on-ramp and gave chase when the suspect slammed on the gas instead of heeding a traffic halt.
According to the WCPD's statement, the pursuit blazed through Highway 24 up to the Caldecott Tunnel. It was there, perhaps seeking to escape, that the suspect lost control, and his vehicle embraced a bush at the tunnel's west side exit. Abandoning the wrecked Hyundai, the suspect leaped over a chain-link fence, triggering a foot race with the cops. Officers reported taking "the next exit and locate him," a move that quickly concluded the pursuit with the suspect in cuffs.
The alleged thief, who turned out to be the Hyundai's lone occupant, was arrested for possessing a stolen vehicle and evading police. "He was transported to county jail," the WCPD highlighted, underscoring their commitment to the safety of their constituents, as recounted in their public statement on Facebook. The suspect's name has not been released pending the investigation's progress.
This latest instance of collaboration between the WCPD and CPD underscores the ongoing efforts of local law enforcement to tackle the area's vehicle theft incidents. The teamwork demonstrated by the two departments ensured that the chase ended safely, with no reports of injuries or damage beyond the suspect's vehicle and the unfortunate bush at the tunnel's edge, which got caught in the drama. Both departments emphatically reassured the public of their unwavering vigilance in securing the community.
