An elderly Massachusetts man with dementia was safely rescued Wednesday from a wooded area, thanks to the combined efforts of State Police and a keen-nosed K9 unit. The 87-year-old had disappeared earlier that day around noon, launching a multi-unit search effort. The Massachusetts State Police news release detailed the collaborative rescue mission, which occurred in the woods off Blandford Road.
The man's footprints, after stepping out from a residential driveway, led State Police K9 units and Tactical units down a steep slope into the woods. The Russell Police had carried out checks at nearby homes and businesses looking for the man, while footprints leading into the forest were being tracked by the MSP K9 team.
In pursuit, MSP K9 Unit Trooper Ken Hanchett and his dog, Orry, were quickly on the scent trail, according to statements in the release. Orry, with determined purpose, guided Trooper Hanchett through a challenging terrain of flooded and iced grounds to a large tree where they discovered the missing man.
Meanwhile, from the sky, MSP Air 4 detected a heat signature that coincided with Orry's discovery. Finding the man lying motionless at the foot of the tree, Troopers Hanchett, along with K9 Trooper John Areche and Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) Trooper Timothy Fanion, quickly went to work administering emergency first aid. It was nearly 8 PM, indicating that the elderly man had been out in the cold for nearly eight hours.
The troopers battled the elements to carry the unresponsive man to a waiting ambulance. He was then transported to a nearby hospital, battling cold exposure injuries, and is now receiving the necessary treatment. The effective coordination between the ground units and air support proved crucial in the positive outcome of this incident, reflecting the valuable contributions of the various units within the State Police.
