League City ramps up patrols as teen fugitives' rumors spark school threat panic. Increased law enforcement presence is being witnessed at schools across League City, Texas, following a whirl of fear induced by social media posts concerning two teenagers believed to have fled Wyoming with stolen firearms, authorities confirmed Monday.
Officials have decided to visibly station officers at local educational institutions. The preventative response comes after unverified reports suggested the possibility of a threat to unspecified schools. Sequences of events led the League City Police Department (LCPD) to review the concern. Although no direct threat was found, the presence of officers is set to be more pronounced at 32 private daycares during peak hours, FOX26 Houston reported.
According to LCPD Chief Clifford Woitena, the alleged threat lacks documentation, and he expressed this in a recent statement. "We have been very guarded with the information we released or made public due to a lack of credible intelligence and our desire to try and prevent the current state of panic," Chief Woitena wrote in a Facebook update, as obtained by ABC13. The chief clarified that while the suspected teens had mentioned school shootings six months prior, no specific threat to League City schools was documented.
Officials have stressed the importance of community vigilance, encouraging locals to report any sightings of a 1969 white Chevy Chevelle—the vehicle the teens, identified as Otis Edlund and Quintin Wyrick, are thought to have absconded in. In a collective effort to ensure the safety of its citizens particularly children, LCPD will continue to coordinate with other law enforcement agencies, including the Galveston County Sheriff's Office and the League City Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office. "Our goal is to have an officer available at each location during drop off and pick up, as well as patrol officers increasing their presence at the campuses during the interim hours," Chief Woitena explained in his earlier remarks to FOX26 Houston.
The teens' link to League City is tangential at best; they are said to have a female acquaintance with family in the area. However, Chief Woitena confirmed that the local relatives have no relationship with the young men and would not provide them with welcome or shelter. As law enforcement continues their search, LCPD has entered the suspects' vehicle into the Flock camera system to facilitate a swift and effective apprehension. The public is asked to remain alert and to contact police with any relevant information.
