Lone Star College-CyFair's Center for the Arts is prepping to say farewell to its rickety rooftop. Following a directive from the college system's board of trustees, the college is moving to hammer out a deal with Tadco Roofing, which won't charge more than $454,824 for the job. Ted Louie, the Cy-Fair campus' vice president of administrative services, confirmed to the Houston Chronicle the necessity to outright replace the current roof, citing a study from two years prior, pointing to wear and tear on the over twenty-year-old structure.
The roof, clearly not designed to stubbornly keep going for more than two decades, has succumbed to multiple leaks, causing no small amount of moisture damage inside the building. With an eye on future growth and improvements, Louie pointed out to the Houston Chronicle that this roofing project is only the beginning, with a remodel of the student services center planned to follow suit by fall, aimed to enhance space and user-friendliness.
But the roofing woes don't end at Cy-Fair. At Lone Star College-University Park, several structures are on deck to get an overhaul, according to documents highlighted in a community meeting noted by Community Impact. Projects include everything from remodeling of collaborative rooms to soundproofing upgrades, with a budget cap for each ranging from $362,250 to $792,335. But those numbers are just part of a wider shuffle, with more distant plans flagging a mint $28.9 million center bound for Magnolia and a fresh, modern addition to the Victory Center, both with projected completion dates in the mid-2020s.
These undertakings underscore the college's striving plan to create environments that students can not only feel safe in, but also belong, according to Louie's assurance to the Houston Chronicle. Despite delays and funding potpourris, Lone Star College appears committed to turn over not just a new leaf, but to overhaul an entire tree of structures and services for their campuses – although specific timelines for the replacement of the arts building roof at Cy-Fair remain as clear as clouds waiting to leak through its aged tresses.
