A man was shot by police after he rammed his car into a Broward fuel station during a domestic dispute that spiraled into a high-stakes police pursuit, authorities said Friday.

The chaos began near 5 a.m. when a 31-year-old woman sought refuge from her 32-year-old boyfriend inside a gas station at 10261 W. Broward Boulevard in Plantation, according to CBS News Miami. In an aggressive attempt to reach her, the man slammed his car into the business's door before fleeing the scene as police arrived, sparking a chase.

Officials told CBS News Miami that the pursuit came to a halt in Lauderhill when he crashed into a median at the 1600 block of NW 31st Avenue, disabling his vehicle, and took off on foot. Police attempted to apprehend the suspect, who then resisted arrest and, in a violent encounter, tried to take an officer's gun, at which point he was shot by police.

A resident nearby, woken by her child amidst the commotion, recounted the harrowing aftermath. "I was woken up by one of my children. He said 'mommy, mommy, somebody got shot'. So I jumped up and came outside. He pointed me in the direction where the person was across the street. They were laying face down on the lawn and officers were going back and forth, trying to get him some assistance or something, he was already shot," she told CBS News Miami.

The suspect was transported to the hospital in critical condition, while the list of his pending charges includes kidnapping, false imprisonment, and aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, according to Local 10 News. The incident that led to fleeing law enforcement and an attempt to deprive an officer of a weapon remains under investigation.
