In a moment caught on camera and celebrated for its everyday heroism, Mansfield Police Officer Chad Stevens sprang into action to save a life in a roadside emergency. On a January Saturday, while on duty on Interstate Highway 20, Stevens noticed a driver's distress signal and didn’t hesitate to assist. The gutsy cop performed the Heimlich Maneuver on a choking local woman, effectively saving her from a potentially fatal situation, according to the Mansfield Police Department.
Details of the incident, which unfolded near Anglin Road, were shared by the Mansfield Police Department, who praised Officer Stevens for his decisive response. The video of the rescue, now circulating online, shows the white vehicle with its hazard lights flashing and a panic-stricken driver at her wit's end. Heading eastbound, Stevens immediately understood the gravity of the situation and jumped into action.
In a terrifying turn of events, Samantha, the motorist, was fighting for breath after an abrupt maneuver caused by another car led to her inhaling a piece of gum. Stricken with the sudden chokehold of her perishability, she managed to pull over and signal for help.
The rescue video captures Officer Stevens calmly approaching Samantha and performing the life-saving maneuver. His rapid intervention dislodged the obstruction, allowing Samantha to breathe once again. According to the department, her relief was palpable, as moments of fear and vulnerability gave way to salvation at the hands of a prepared public servant. Samantha later recounted that she was desperately struggling for air for several minutes before Officer Stevens happened by. The community has since hailed Stevens as a real-life guardian, a sentiment shared widely following the release of the video.
