As National Invasive Species Awareness Week kicks off, Maple Grove is shining a spotlight on their ongoing battle with the emerald ash borer (EAB). This pest, which has been wreaking havoc on ash trees since its 2016 discovery in the city, prompted the development of a management plan by city staff.
In an effort to save the neighborhood's greenery, Maple Grove started a multi-year initiative in 2021, aimed at treating and removing infected public ash trees. While the goal is to salvage as many trees as they could, officials admitted that for reasons related to condition or location, some trees just couldn't be saved.
The city has developed a creative story map to educate residents on the EAB situation, according to the City of Maple Grove, MN - Local Government.
