A fierce blaze erupted early Tuesday morning in Elk Grove Village, sending a vast cloud of black smoke billowing into the sky that was visible for miles and forcing local authorities to swiftly act to contain the inferno.

According to NBC Chicago, the fire started around 7:30 a.m. at 270 United Ln. as multiple vehicles became engulfed in flames. This incident occurred in the northwest Chicago suburb and caused more than 119 people to temporarily lose power when a truck reportedly crashed into a restoration line, potentially setting off the blaze. ComEd, the local power provider, is expected to fully restore power by 9 a.m.

Those in the vicinity of the fire incident captured video footage of the large smoke clouds produced by the blaze, which involved firefighters from Elk Grove, Bensenville, and Woodale who continued to battle the fire and chase after hot spots well into the morning, as per ABC7 Chicago.

The fire significantly damaged a semi-tractor repair facility within an industrial park, stated acting Elk Grove Village Fire Chief Nathan Gac in an interview. The fire consumed a building, four trailers, two tractors, and seven cars. "So there was a significant amount of black smoke a heavy volume of black smoke mostly on the exterior of the building ranging between 50 to 60 feet in the air," Gac said. Moreover, one worker suffered significant burns and was swiftly transported to Loyola Hospital for treatment.

As the smoke from the fire began to dwindle around 7:45 a.m., environmental authorities, including the EPA and water reclamation, arrived on site to monitor for water run-off contamination from hazardous materials such as diesel fuel or used motor oil. Although officials confirmed the fire did not impact operations at O'Hare Airport, the smoke cloud was significant enough to warrant notification to the control tower. Meanwhile, ComEd crews worked to repair power lines affected by the flames.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and updates are expected as the situation develops.
