The residents of Mesa, Arizona, have recently been treated to a peculiar sight at Riverview Park, where simulated predators now share the pond with its more typical inhabitants. First reported by FOX 10 Phoenix on February 8, a fake alligator was spotted floating in the water, its presence convincing enough to merit 911 calls from concerned bystanders.
Joining the synthetic saurian on Valentine's Day were a pair of artificial hippos, reported by FOX 10 Phoenix. The illusion of the fake creatures has been so realistic that some, like park visitor Jeanette Sanchez, were led to believe in their authenticity, with her noting, "I think so," when asked if she thought the hippo was real, adding, "I saw it on TikTok."
The purpose of these faux animals, however, is far from deceptive. They provide practical benefits for the park's wildlife, particularly for the ponderous turtles that use them as platforms to bask in the Arizona sun. Adults and children are also drawn to these novel attractions, with one local, Madisen Stewart, telling FOX 10 Phoenix, "It'll bring people together more. Almost like a zoo, but it's not a zoo. It’s a park."
Meanwhile, Mesa Parks and Recreation officials have clarified the animals' purpose, stating that the non-living reptiles were introduced to reduce the turtles' risk of wandering onto dangerous streets, following distressing incidents of turtle fatalities. According to an ABC15 investigation, Andrea Moore of Mesa Parks and Recreation advised the public, "Leave them in place — we have them spaced further out so anglers don’t catch them with lines. Leave the turtles be, peacefully."
As the city assures, these animal effigies are anchored firmly beneath the water, providing a stable and safe reprieve for the live turtles. The community's response to the fake beasts – ranging from initial shock to entertainment – highlights the unique approach Mesa has taken in enhancing its park ecosystem while quelling the fears of the locals, a revelation brought forward by both the interviews and reporting from ABC15 and FOX 10 Phoenix.
