A 60-year-old woman's hasty return to the secure zone at Miami International Airport unleashed a disruptive series of events on Wednesday, leading to her arrest and a temporary standstill at one of the nation's busiest travel hubs, officials reported. The suspect, identified as Esperanza Ortiz-Carvajal, is charged with a breach of airport operations after allegedly dashing past a security checkpoint without authorization, as per the arrest documents.
The ordeal commenced around 3:45 p.m. when Ortiz-Carvajal reportedly stepped out and then back into Terminal H through an exit lane, triggering confusion that necessitated a pause in operations across Terminals H and J, several flights were thwarted in their tracks, unable to taxi away from the gates whereas passengers faced restrictions on movement in and out of the affected zones, NBC Miami detailed.
The disruption culminated with officials locating Ortiz-Carvajal aboard an Avianca aircraft, whereupon she was detained and subsequently incarcerated. Caribbean National Weekly notes her occupation listed as a "spiritual coach," and authorities indicated she resides in Colombia.
In court the following day, the defense and prosecution sparred over her bond with the defense attorney suggesting a lower sum citing potential language barriers, misunderstanding however the prosecutor rebuffed, emphasizing the airport's ample Spanish-language signage, a judge ultimately decided on setting the bond at $1,000 Caribbean National Weekly added. Ortiz-Carvajal now faces the legal system with a public attorney by her side as per court records.
