A Miami-Dade woman has landed behind bars, accused of slipping a lethal surprise into her boyfriend's drink. Ivette Diaz, 49, is facing charges after her boyfriend nearly guzzled bleach instead of tea, according to authorities.

The couple, who've shared a life and a home for three years, experienced the shocking turn of events at their Southwest 158th Place residence on Feb. 20, as reported by NBC Miami. The man had prepared a meal, with tea to wash it down, before stepping outside to call his employer, leaving Diaz inside alone, a detail highlighted by Local 10.

Upon his return, the unsuspecting man shared his meal with Diaz and, after noting its spiciness, offered her his tea, which she vehemently refused. He took a large gulp, and his throat began to burn as he detected the pungent bleach aroma, the police reported. "There's bleach in this drink! Did you put bleach in my drink?" he confronted Diaz, to which she reportedly responded, "I thought it was sugar."

Emergency responders took the victim to Homestead Hospital for treatment, while Diaz's arrest unfolded later that Friday. Her landlord, surprised by the incident, told NBC Miami, "I don't know what happened with them because they look like a beautiful, very happy couple." Reflecting a ghastly mistake, detectives noted the stark contrast between the sugar's location in an upper cabinet and the bleach tablets' place under the sink.

Diaz invoked her right to an attorney and, as of Monday, remains in custody without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. She faces a first-degree felony charge of poisoning food or water.
