Breaking ground on what is slated to be a haven for seniors in need of affordable housing, Miami's leaders are set to converge on Aventura. Come today, February 12, 10:00 a.m., Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, and Commissioner Micky Steinberg will be in attendance to celebrate the start of construction for the Oasis at Aventura, an affordable housing development for those aged 62 and up. The ceremony will mark the beginning of what promises to to quickly become a cornerstone for the community's elderly.

Oasis at Aventura isn't just any residential building; this eight-story project, located at 18700 NE 2nd Avenue, is dedicated to offering 95 affordable apartments expressly for seniors who earn at or below set percentages of the area's median income. With various income thresholds like 25%, 33%, and 60%, the rents are structured to be accessible, ranging from a modest $484 to an attainable $1,161. The Housing Trust Group (HTG), along with AM Affordable Housing, led by none other than NBA Hall of Famer Alonzo Mourning, spearheads this initiative, as reported by Miami-Dade County's news announcement.

According to details provided by the Miami-Dade County release, the building isn't just affordable; it's eco-conscious too. Oasis has been certified by the National Green Building Standard, featuring energy-efficient lighting and appliances. Add to that, a suite of amenities including a community room, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a business center, a library, and even a lounge area that spills onto an expansive outdoor terrace. Residents can expect to move in by Spring of 2025, when construction is projected to wrap.

Providing a significant financial underpinning, Miami-Dade County has allocated a cool $2.4 million to the Oasis project. This funding springs from the local government's Affordable Housing Surtax Program and seeks to to stitching a critical gap in the area's need for senior housing. Among the apartments, eight units are designated under the Section 8 project-based voucher program, ensuring a range of affordability options for prospective tenants.
