Thousands are gearing up to cycle, run, and walk across South Florida this Saturday for the 14th annual Dolphins Challenge Cancer (DCC) event. The much-anticipated event aims to raise funds for the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, South Florida's only National Cancer Institute designated cancer center and a part of UHealth - the University of Miami Health System. According to CBS News, last year's event raised a record-breaking $10.5 million, contributing to the $64 million amassed since the initiative's inception in 2010.
This year, the DCC is set to honor Miami Dolphins legends by naming routes after them. Participants can choose to tackle the 13-mile Dan Marino ride, the 39-mile Larry Csonka ride, the 54-mile Zach Thomas ride, or the 99-mile Jason Taylor ride, as reported by WSVN. The event will also feature an adjusted timeline to allow all participants to have a more inclusive finish line experience.
Moving to the heart of Miami Gardens, the event will utilize the facilities of the Miami International Autodrome, including the Paddock garages and the start/finish line of the Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix, to elevate fans' experiences significantly. A post-event celebration with 10-time Grammy Award winner Chaka Khan is set to wrap up the day.
Tyler Epp, Miami Grand Prix President and a member of the DCC board, continues to honor his late father with "Team Flash." "This is in our way, my family’s way, to say we’re gonna give back a little bit, not only financially, but really try to be a part of this movement that’s really centered here in South Florida to create good and create opportunity through Sylvester [Cancer Research Center]," Epp told WSVN. Last year, Epp participated in the challenge remotely from the Middle East, demonstrating that the fight against cancer knows no boundaries.
The DCC, founded by the Miami Dolphins organization, has grown to become the NFL's largest fundraising event, with a mission to improve lives through support for innovative research. Sylvester's standing as among the top 50 of U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals in 2022 adds prestige to the cause. This Saturday's event is more than just a ride; it's a crusade against cancer, fueling hope and advancement with each mile covered.
