Michigan health officials have sounded the alarm after confirming the state's first case of measles since 2019. The patient is a child from Oakland County with a history of international travel, officials disclosed. Teaming up with the Oakland County Health Division, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) stated that, based on when the symptoms started, they believe to not have seen any further exposures outside of the immediate household.
In light of the diagnosis, the MDHHS is now strongly suggesting that individuals aged 1 and older who are not yet vaccinated should promptly get their measles shots. "Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect ourselves and our loved ones from potential outbreaks of diseases like measles," Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, Michigan's chief medical executive, emphasized in a release featured by The Detroit News.
With the virus making headlines again, residents are urgently reminded of measles' highly contagious nature. It can spread through direct contact or airborne transmission, surviving up to two hours in the environment where an infected person has coughed or sneezed. Symptoms, including high fever, cough, runny nose, and a prominent rash, generally begin from seven to 14 days after exposure but can take up to 21 days to manifest.
Amidst this health scare, it's revealed that routine vaccinations have lately been on the decline. According to the MDHHS, there's been a notable drop in the vaccine coverage for children in Michigan – slumping from 89.4% in 2017 to 84% for children ages 4 to 6 years old by 2022. Even more concerning, vaccination rates for younger children aged 19 through 35 months have slightly decreased as well, as reported by WXYZ.
