
A wave of crime swept through Newark this past week, leaving a trail of arrests ranging from DUI to narcotics and theft, as reported by the Newark Police Department Crime Blotter. The string of incidents began in the early hours of Monday, January 29, when a 27-year-old San Jose man was busted for drunken driving and packing heat in his car after a vehicle collision on Central Avenue near Newark Boulevard.
Throughout the week, officers were kept on their toes with multiple reports of stolen vehicles in several parts of the city—from La Salle Drive to Mirabeau Drive. Not to be outdone, narcotics remained a stubborn stain on the city as arrests included a 42-year-old Hayward man taken into custody for possession of both a stolen vehicle and narcotics and an unsheltered 67-year-old apprehended for theft and drug paraphernalia. The Newark Police didn't hesitate also to cite and release individuals found with narcotics paraphernalia, emphasizing a revolving door of recidivism and continued drug offenses in the community.
In a proactive stance against crime, Officer Williams, on Saturday, February 3, tackled fraudulent antics and drug-related activities by arresting seven individuals in the 35000 block of Bettencourt Street - their charges included fraud, narcotics, outstanding warrants, and possession of stolen property. Their stories and others swept up in the week's enforcement dragnet now find their place in the public eye on the Newark Police Department's arrest log, complete with mugshots for community scrutiny.
