
An off-duty Chicago police officer found himself in a gunfight early Tuesday morning in the city's Calumet Heights neighborhood. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the confrontation took place around 4:12 a.m. in the 1600 block of East 95th Street when an armed individual targeted the officer and gunfire was exchanged.
While the shots rang out, the off-duty cop, who was confronted, was not injured in the shooting. "An exchange of gunfire ensued," the police mentioned, with the gunman ultimately fleeing the scene. The suspect had not been apprehended following the incident, as stated in the police's narration of events.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is stepping in to take a closer look. In a call for community engagement, they've urged anyone with knowledge to step up with information. The investigation centers around the circumstances of this close call, zeroing in on the sequence of events that left bystanders unharmed and the suspect at large.
Adding to the scene was a white Audi SUV, a silent witness peppered with police attention at a nearby gas station following the shootout. WLS reported on the officer's encounter with the armed suspect, as officers scoured the vehicle, piecing together evidence from the early morning scare.
