An Ohio mother has pleaded guilty to the charges of aggravated murder and child endangerment after she left her 16-month-old daughter alone for 10 days to take a vacation, officials said. Kristel Candelario, 32, of Cleveland could face a life sentence for the death of her daughter, Jailyn, who was found unresponsive in a playpen soiled with urine and feces, The Detroit News reported.

Authorities indicated that the mother deserted her child in June 2023 when she went to Detroit and Puerto Rico, the child's conditions upon discovery were dire and ghastly with the toddler "extremely dehydrated" at the time of death, according to Prosecutor Michael O'Malley, in a statement obtained by WKYC. After returning from her trip on June 16, Candelario found Jailyn unresponsive in the playpen and alerted the authorities, but efforts to revive the child were in vain.

The details of the incident, as reported by NBC News, paint a harrowing picture of neglect with the child pronounced dead shortly after emergency services arrived at the scene. Candelario was initially indicted on multiple charges including two counts of murder and one count of felonious assault however the plea arrangement led to the dismissal of some of those charges with Candelario now only facing one count of aggravated murder along with a count of endangering children.
