A tragedy struck Maricopa yesterday afternoon when a car lost control and collided with a tree, leaving one person dead and another in critical condition. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Taft Avenue and McDavid Road—just west of Highway 347—forcing the closure of the roads for several hours as emergency services responded to the grisly scene.
According to azfamily.com, authorities found two individuals in the vehicle upon their arrival. The individual who was declared dead at the scene was seated in the passenger seat. The driver, who was speeding west on McDavid Road and suffered life-threatening injuries, was transported to a local hospital in the Valley. It remains unclear if impairment contributed to the cause of the accident, as the driver was unable to make a left turn and veered across the eastbound lanes before crashing.
The Maricopa Police Department has sought the assistance of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office’s Vehicular Crime Unit in the ongoing investigation. No estimate was provided as per when the roads would be reopened, as clean-up and investigative processes extended into the evening hours.
"As a result, the vehicle traveled across the eastbound lanes and collided with a tree," a spokesperson for the Maricopa Police stated in the course of providing details regarding the speed at which the vehicle was traveling before losing control. This information was highlighted in a report by FOX 10 Phoenix. The identities of the individuals involved have not been made public as the investigation continues.
