An 8-year-old boy in Peoria, Arizona met a tragic end after he was fatally struck by the same car from which he had exited just moments earlier. The Peoria Police Department reported that the incident occurred on a local road near Vistanca Boulevard and Ridgeline Road, as stated by FOX 10 Phoenix.
Authorities arrived at the scene approximately 3:13 p.m. and found that the child had somehow exited the moving vehicle, only to be hit by it subsequently. The boy was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, however, despite the urgent medical care, he succumbed to his injuries, according to details from FOX 10 Phoenix.
While speed has been ruled out as a contributing factor, police sessions are investigating whether impairment played a role in this heart-wrenching event. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and, so far, no arrests have been made. Peoria Police Chief Thom Intrieri expressed his condolences, "The loss of life is always difficult, but such a tragedy can affect not only the family of the child involved but the entire community as well," Intrieri told 12 News.
Amidst the grieving process, the Peoria Unified School District is offering support to students and staff touched by the loss. The child, a second grader at Vistancia Elementary School, has the school rallying to help the community heal. In a note to the school community, principal Megan Bennett wrote, "This devastating news will undoubtedly impact our tight-knit community. My primary focus is providing support to our students and staff as they process this loss," a sentiment conveyed in communications acquired by both FOX 10 Phoenix and 12 News.
The principal also addressed the potential signs of grief that students may exhibit, such as fatigue, tears, and changes in eating and sleeping patterns, indicating the natural but painful reactions expected in the face of such loss. Bennett also highlighted the importance of open communication and reassurance during this difficult time, as the school prepares to dispatch grief support teams for those in need.
