As the chill of winter finally begins to thaw, Philadelphians laced up their skates for one last hoorah at Dilworth Park's ice rink before spring officially takes hold. "We just wanted to do this before we start the week, and have a nice little date night," Rachel Rabenold told 6abc after gliding across the ice with the city's twinkling lights as a backdrop. Not everyone was prepared for the nippy weather that accompanied their rink rendezvous, with Rabenold admitting, "I regretted not bringing gloves, but I'm doing okay because it's not too bad out here."
Dilworth Park has been a hub for winter festivities, featuring attractions like the Rothman Orthopaedics Ice Rink, an annual favorite among locals. Seasonal decorations, including reindeer topiaries in the Wintergarden and a cozy setup at the Rothman Orthopaedics Cabin, have added to the park's transformation into a winter wonderland this season, as described on the Center City District's website. As the winter attractions come to a close, residents are preparing to shed their layers, anticipating the warm stretch promised in this week's forecast.
But not all are thrilled with the coming change in weather. "I don't like it because I like the winter and I like to go sledding a lot," 10-year-old Ben Gicsevich expressed to CBS News Philadelphia. The bittersweet feelings were shared among those who relish the city's colder months and all the activities that come with it. Dilworth Park staff hinted that despite the ice melting away, the fun isn't over, with plans for a roller skating rink slated to open in April.
Amid the shared moments of joy and chilly trepidation, Philadelphia's residents made the best of the rink's final day open this season. Charles Scott from Southwest Philly summed up the sentiment among the skaters, saying, "Enjoy the weather and enjoy the skating," as reported by 6abc.With the ice soon to be a memory, Philadelphia's denizens will be trading in their skates for sneakers, ready to embrace the roller rink and, with it, the promise of springtime activities in the heart of their bustling city.
